Andrew Spence joined Edinburgh’s North Capital Management as chief investment officer in late 2020, and additionally heads up the company’s Aspen range of outsourced funds.

He was formerly chief operating officer at cross-town rival Charlotte Square, and an investment director at Optimus Capital. He began his career as an analyst and manager at Barclays Wealth’s local office in 2007.

He names the Troy Trojan Income fund as the most recent addition to the company’s 200-strong buy list and the Gravis Clean Energy fund as his hidden gem. Over the past 12 months, his strategic exposure to real assets has been one of his better calls as inflation has picked up.

‘Only invest in things you understand and can explain simply,’ he recommends. ‘And try to do so at a sensible price.’
