
Michael Paul joined Brewin Dolphin in March 2014 and was promoted to head of fund research in 2019. In addition to overseeing the fund research process, he is responsible for US, Asian, emerging markets and Japanese investment recommendations.
His best call over the last 12 months has been to maintain conviction in a number of deep value strategies that had previously struggled.
His biggest regret has been not rotating more out of growth. Before Brewin, Paul was an investment manager at City Asset Management, which he joined in 2009 after having graduated with a first-class degree in economics from the University of Bath. He is also a CFA charterholder.
He recommends young professional investors ‘enjoy’ their work. He feels that while ‘everyone will have frustrations’ at times, those working in the industry are ‘in enviable positions where we get a very varied work load and the ability to interview some very smart and interesting people on a day-to-day basis’.
