PortfolioMetrix’s UK head of investments Nic Spicer celebrated a decade with the business this year and says seeing it grow from a fledgling start-up to a multi-billion manager has been one of the most satisfying experiences of his career.

He previously spent five years as an analyst at Onyx Financial Advisors, where he helped manage a fund of hedge funds.

He describes his best call this year as having ‘about 20% of my portfolios in alternatives which have done their job and delivered a positive return when both equities and bonds haven't’.

Listed infrastructure in his portfolios has also been a following wind, but exposure to UK smaller companies was less successful.
