Shane Balkham joined You Asset Management – formerly Beaufort Investment - at launch in 2012 as a fund manager, rising to chief investment officer last year.

He is blunt about the relatively strongest and weakest calls of his period in the top-job, and reflective on the dangers of getting too caught up in the drama of market movements.

‘[The] best call has been to maintain a high level of diversification across our products,’ he said. ‘Worst call has been not generating enough alpha from our UK fund selection. Do not underestimate the power of compounding. It may sound dull, however a long-term investment plan can unleash significant returns.’

He says if he had not gone into wealth management ‘I would like to be an underwater photographer - I have a fascination with sharks, so filming sharks around the world would be my ideal job’.
